Info for the Dictator

As you come up with book suggestions or requests for month(s) to host post them as comments on this post. I will check this post for comments for now on. As per our discussion, I will try and always keep us 3 or 4 months ahead.

Take the Book Club bowling, take them bowling

Being that it is Thursday and only Eric and I had expressed interest in bowling this Saturday, I will assume it is not happening. I just added a poll to see when we should have the bowling book club. I thought the 19th/20th weekend was ideal, but we can do it some other time as well. Maybe on a week day when everyone is off for the holidays? So go vote now bitches!

Benevolent Dictatorship

When Dave took over the leadership role in this club, I feel like we got a much needed boost of energy. Now I feel our book club back sliding into a quagmire of book/host/date selection. I would just like to put forth my dream scenario. Everyone post recommendations on this Blog as well as preferred month(s) for hosting. Then the benevolent dictator chooses the book/host/date for the proceeding 3 or 4 months and continues in such a fashion so that we always have the next 3 or 4 months planned. Then if someone decides later that they cannot host on the assigned date they can work that out with the benevolent dictator or swap months with someone. If this system were in place, I feel we could avoid our current problem of either meeting in 3 weeks or not at all in December. Also it would allow me to schedule things around book club if possible. I would like to know how everyone feels about this.

Recommendation

So, I checked around and it's kind of available so I'll see how it goes. It's short...less than 200 pages. I think a reissue was just done bundling it with other stories and the original is around as well. Anyway, since the list was lost, I'm changing my recommendation to Trout Fishing in America by Richard Brautigan.

Next Book

My sister is having a going away party on the 27th so I won't be at the next meeting. What will the next book be after Babbit? Scot

Book

What will be the next book? I just finished one and need something to read. Scot

Out South

I am in between Roe and Nall. Go to 127th...there's a stoplight...and turn whichever direction will put you between Roe and Nall. Go to Sherwood and go south...then go to 129th (not marked) and turn right...take the first right on Rosewood...top of the cul-de-sac...12800.

Usual time. I'm still pondering the details of food. The basement will keep us plenty cool in case of heat wave.

Call if you have trouble finding the place...

Pre-Meeting Trivia Anyone?

Anyone up for some trivia? I was thinking next Thursday...July 17.

Let me know if there are any takers.

Next round of recommendations

Recommended books are trickling in. Below is what I remember from the last meeting and elsewhere. Let’s call this list tentative and subject to revision until the July meeting, when it will become permanent. Let’s set the schedule at that meeting.

If you have something to add or change, do it in the list below or in comments:

Ben Rice, Pobby and Dingan (Robbie)

Ha Jin, Waiting. (Johnny)

Sinclair Lewis, Babbitt. (Crosby)

Cormac McCarthy, No Country for Old Men. (Scot) This is the book not the movie.

Junot Diaz, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. (Buchmann)

By-law amendments

Fellers, while I still have some shreds of memory from book club at Scot’s, lemme post the two changes to the group by-laws that were decided by the consent of those present:

1.) Meetings shall be held within the last two weeks of a given month. The purpose of this rule is to ensure that one meeting does not follow too closely on the previous meeting.

2.) Not only books but also movies may be sponsored for discussion. Just as members would be expected to read a book prior to the meeting, so with a movie.

Any objections or clarifications needed? Discuss in comments.

June date?

Sorry to miss book club...mother in law in town...family calls. Is there a date for June?

Bringng Out Your Book

I have somebody's copy of Bringing Out the Dead. Since only Scot and Sven read it, I will assume it was one of you two. Do you want me to go ahead and return it to the library?
For those that were not in attendance, we have the following:
1) There is no book for Scot's meeting, therefore:
a) Mike is off the hook for picking a book.
b) We will introduce new members
b) Play poker?
c) Vote on By-laws
d) Everyone come with a new book suggestion.
e) Mike is back on the hook.
2) We will be reading "The March" for the July meeting at Eric's
3) Supertramp is Super Awesome.

Lazy Scrollers

I realize that it takes some effort to scroll down to the bottom of the blog. Buy a wheel mouse if you must. Book club at my place, 7519 Locust on May 3rd.
Black Swans fly again April 24th at the Record Bar.
Scot hosts June.
Eric hosts July at his new place.
New people start attending in June?
Does that cover it?

A brilliant blog that, unfortunately, is getting stale. Some of the earlier posts are hilarious.

April 12th - Black Swan Green

Gentlemen, take note: the next book club meeting shall be held on Saturday, April 12, 2008, at my house, sevenish. The book is Black Swan Green by David Mitchell (Dennis Conrow, sponsor). As clement spring will have by then returned (one hopes), I intend to fire up the grill. Perhaps to make this.

UPDATE: Clement spring, indeed! Ix-nay on the ill-gray, probs. So, I know Scot's otherwise -- and rockingly -- engaged, and I've heard a yea from Johnny, but what about the rest of yez?

The King of Johnson County

'allo lads,

I've realized that I set the book club date for the 23rd of February, and only those in attendance at Swen's realize this. So, I'm making it public. Here's a Google Map.

Many of you know that I've recently inherited my parents' house, so drunkenly marching down the street with flaming torches to demand an expanation from the author of this month's book as to why such bilge was ever allowed to be printed is probably out. We could still drive to said author's house, but the flaming torches may go out in the car. All that aside, I'll do my best to have reasonable sitting places for you all, but I'll ask your forgiveness or sympathy when you see the sheer amount of shit that is in this house.

Righto. I realize that anything that's posted on this blog is freely searchable through Google, so I'll privately send address/ telephone information in an email later.

March in July

What do we think about canceling March book club? We have crept to the end of the month with February book club. Maybe if we skip March we could avoid finding a new host and get our meet date back up towards the beginning of the month. Dave, I realize you are the sponsor. Do you mind? We could move E.L. Fudge to July.

Sorry I missed it.

Hey book clubbers, sorry I missed it. I'm lame. I've been a travellin' fool for the Holidays and work and just wanted to hole up.

The Curious Incident of the Book Club at Sven's House

Steven's place - 3726 Washington Apt. 6 kcmo.
From Broadway, go west on 38th Street (from Southwest Tfwy, go east)to Washington, then north. 3726 is down the block, on the left, across the street from a wooden fence, not quite directly behind the Uptown Theater. Press the doorbell for Apt. 6. If you get lost, travel in a spiral until you've found the Uptown, which has a big colourful marquee with lots of lights and names of upcoming bands or wedding receptions and sometimes if it's a really big act there'll be a long line of wankers queued up round the side of the building and you can tell what sort of show it'll be from the clothes they're wearing. or you can call 816.509.1770.
