December.
It seems reasonable that Dennis' birthday could be as close to a December gathering as we are going to get at this point. If not, perhaps a trivia outing? It would be nice to get the gang together again.
Eric's Book Suggestions...if anyone is out there.
Not sure if the KC Star hack knows his books or not, but I saw these on his tops of 2009 list...
“Lovers & Strangers,” by Grant Tracey (Pocol Press). Artfully constructed short stories thick with pop culture and deep in characters who grapple with timely, yet timeless, questions of love, intimacy, betrayal, sex and sexuality.
“Welcome to Oakland: A Novel,” by Eric Miles Williamson (Mad Dog Screaming Press). Working-class fiction is rare. Working-class fiction of such zest, evoking Nathanael West at his most frenzied, is even rarer.
“The Year of the Flood,” by Margaret Atwood (Doubleday/Nan A. Talese). Leave it to Atwood to find humor in a post-apocalyptic world as she covertly, and brilliantly, address questions of how we need to live on an imperiled planet. (I think Dave mentioned this one too.)
“Road Dogs,” by Elmore Leonard (Morrow). Three characters from earlier Leonard mysteries plan joint capers and individual double crosses.
“This Is Where I Leave You,” by Jonathan Tropper (Dutton). Despite the fact that you could cast this as a seriocomic venture for Carrey, Sandler or Ferrell, Tropper may have picked up where Anne Tyler left off awhile back, crafting laughter and tears in a claustrophobic dysfunctional family environment. (I know I am in the minority of liking this guy...thought it is funny that the guy casts the movie...which I am sure has been optioned.)
“Manhood for Amateurs,” by Michael Chabon (Harper). A writerexplores his journey into adulthood in 39 funny, often painfully honest personal essays.
I think the ladies are doing their January club at my house on Jan. 9 or 16. We could do club at my place on the 23rd or 30th. I would like to keep things going, but the severe lack of interest lately leads me to believe that I may be solo on that.

Christmas Party
I think the current idea is to have a party of some sort in December and have our next book discussion in January.
Any suggestions as to date and place for the party?
Any suggestions for the January book?
Host?

This blog is now public. After 5 or 6 beers last night, Dave and I unilaterally made the decision. Now you can subscribe to the RSS or ATOM. Problem solved?

Was using Facebook...sorry
Tomorrow night at my place was the plan. Let me know if you can make it, we moved it to the 19th to accommodate those that were busy on the 12th. Let me know if anyone needs directions or address again.

WTF redux?
Have we abandoned the club altogether? I am out if it is the 12th...going to John Prine show, but I could make it next Saturday (19th). I know Rob was a bit frustrated for some other reasons, but I wasn't sure if that was a once and for all for the whole club.
If we plan to continue, I think we should get a few titles hammered out and nail down the hosting duties. It sounds like Rob is off hosting duties for the foreseeable future...but he was the go to spot for a long time. I don't mind hosting whenever as the fam can go upstairs and we have plenty of separation...but I know I am out in the boonies...though I am no longer alone out here.
I am fine with pushing this month's book until next month...just trying to find out where we stand.

RESCHEDULING April book club
Fellows, I goofed. Next weekend Courtney’s mom is coming from Santa Fe to visit us, so I’m going to have to reschedule book club. I’m very sorry for any grief this may cause; somehow the double-booking escaped my notice until now (let’s just stipulate that I’m a maroon).
The next opportunity I’d have to host would be the following Friday, April 10, so I’m going to reschedule book club for that date.
Please make it known by posting in the blog comments (where this same message is posted) whether you will be able to attend on the 10th. I intend to host book club at that time unless most of you can’t make it, in which case we’ll have to figure out something else.
Again, my apologies to everyone – especially to those who have already finished the book.

Trivia and Rock
Red Kate is having an EP release party at The Brick on Friday March 20th. The Pink Socks (who are bad ass) and The Tantrums (WI) are also playing. It is also trivia night. We are playing 2nd. Anyone still feel the joy of rock? http://www.myspace.com/redkatekc

Farther Shore in Farther Grandview
We never had the chance--too drunk?--to introduce the idea of the next meeting. Except that it's my book at my house. Either March 14 or 7 is fine with me.
Anyhow, the book is "The Farther Shore," which seems very short with big type. I don't know too much more than that, except than it's received a lot of praise. Could be publisher's hyperbole, though.
So, whichever date is best for the majority of you is fine with me.
Address: 13112 5th Street, Grandview MO 64030. Mapquest if you need to.

Trout Fishing In Suburbia.
I guess we will muster on with reduced ranks this Saturday.
I am in between Roe and Nall. Go to 127th...there's a stoplight...and turn whichever direction will put you between Roe and Nall. Go to Sherwood and go south...then go to 129th (not marked) and turn right...take the first right on Rosewood...top of the cul-de-sac...12800.
Usual time.
913-499-8524 if you have questions.

Overbooked
I can't believe this...I can't make book club again. Some BS about being my wife's birthday or something like that. That and the wrap up party for the committee of Canstruction (I'm the co-chair) is Friday so can't go out to dinner with her on Friday so it has to be Saturday. AND, it was my book recommendation.
